Whether your preference is nature or nostalgia, Tuskegee has something for you. With the calming influence of water, Lake Tuskegee is a soothing oasis. Trees, plants, flowers, insects, birds and wildlife thrive in the Tuskegee National Forest.

We celebrate our hometown heroes including Rosa Parks, Booker T. Washington, Dr. George Washington Carver and the Tuskegee Airmen.

Contemporary icons who were born in Tuskegee include entertainer Lionel Richie and media mogul Tom Joyner. In 2010, Lionel Richie announced his vision for the Lionel Richie Foundation, a vehicle that connects his considerable talent and legacy to Tuskegee and Tuskegee University where he earned his undergraduate degree in Economics.

Tuskegee University has a long history of academic excellence and many of its students have achieved greatness. The George Washington Carver Museum and the Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center are also located on the university campus.

Just across the street is The Oaks -the carefully preserved home of Booker T. Washington.

Near the city center is the Tuskegee Civil and Human Rights Multicultural Center, which performs double duty as an official State of Alabama Welcome Center.

This area’s rich history includes the Tuskegee Airmen. In 2008, the United States government opened a museum-like facility in Tuskegee to honor the Airmen’s legacy, which is officially named the Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site. Each year during Labor Day weekend, a celebration is held to pay homage to the Airmen. The BPA Labor Day Fly-In is a family-friendly event that attracts pilots from all over the region who bring their planes to Moton Field for exhibitions,demonstrations,model airplane building and other aviation-related activities.

The annual George Washington Carver Arts and Crafts Festival is an annual event held in the spring each year at Tuskegee Square.

The leadership in Macon County has a bold vision for the entire county. The All Macon County Day Celebration, initiated by County Commission Chairman Louis Maxwell brings together every municipality and jurisdiction located in Macon County for a weekend of camaraderie.

The Macon County Economic Development Authority exists to recruit industries and jobs to Macon County. Macon County is a big land mass with a lot of untouched property that is ripe for investment and development.

The formula of land, investment and a development concept is working well for an enterprising family. They have transformed unused land in Notasulga into a thriving business called Whippoorwill Winery.

Shorter, strategically located off Interstate 85 and U.S. Highway 80 is poised for more growth. This community is home to Halla Climate Systems, an automotive supply company that capitalized on Shorter’s geographic and transportation advantages.

In Franklin, precious history has been preserved. Restored as a museum, Harris Barrett School was built in 1903 with handmade bricks made by Tuskegee Normal School (now Tuskegee University) students under the direction of Booker T. Washington.
